Zanaii is a Lucian-born teenager who swims like a fish and who wants to achieve great things in life, hence her recent move to Florida to continue her education. TT asked Zanaii about her life here and what she misses from back home.

What did you achieve in Saint Lucia?

Zanaii: was part of the Sharks Swim Team and travelled to represent Saint Lucia in regional competitions. I represented my country in golf at the RBL Caribbean Junior Open.

What do you miss about Saint Lucia?

Zanaii: local food! Green mango with salt made in a garlic sauce, ackees and chicken roti. Also, hanging out with my friends and family and being able to easily access the beach.

What is the first thing you’ll do when you get back?

Zanaii: up with old friends, take a swim in the beautiful ocean and, most importantly, just relax because I have had an intense, vigorous athletic and academic year.

What is a ‘must do’ in Saint Lucia for any visitor?

Zanaii: local food; I highly recommend the Triangle Restaurant in Rodney Bay as it offers a wide selection of fresh food and locally made fruit juice and it’s very affordable. Mix and mingle with the locals. Ziplining is a fun thing to do, and taking a boat tour down to Soufriere. A visit to our drive-in volcano with the sulphur springs is an absolute must.

Where is your favourite hang-out spot on the island?

Zanaii: Reduit Beach because I can spend a whole day relaxing with my friends. There are restaurants on the beach and it’s a short distance to the shopping mall.

What do you love about Saint Lucia?

Zanaii: The fact that it is so small and everything is easily accessible. I view Saint Lucia not as an island but as a huge extended family where everyone always seems to know each other, no matter where you visit on the island.

How would you describe Saint Lucia?

Zanaii: Relaxed, friendly, a little more freedom to do one’s own thing, easy-going, with genuinely friendly people who are helpful and polite.
