(To the tune of Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel)

Hello ocean, my old friend

I’ve come to dive with you again

In your currents slowly drifting

I watch your secrets slowly baring

And the pictures that you planted in my brain

Still remain

Within the sound of scuba.

On photo dives I stalked alone

Subject matter in my zone

In the halo of my dive lamp

Subject focused and not breaking camp

When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of another’s light

That split the night

And broke the sound of scuba.

Then in the deepest blue I saw

Ten thousand divers, maybe more

Divers talking without speaking

Divers hearing without listening

Divers writing slates that buddies never shared

Coz no one dared

Disturb the sound of scuba.

“Fools” said I, “You do not know,

Scuba like addiction grows

Read my slates that I might teach you

Watch my points that I might show you”

But my words like silent signals fell

And echoed

In the depths of scuba.

And the divers looked amazed

In the currents God had made

And the guide flashed out his warning

That the dive was now ending

And the signs said

“The words of the dive guide will always be obeyed

And never swayed”

All whisper’d in the sound of scuba.
