Sandals Halcyon Intern
Sandals Resorts has an intern program, where students studying hospitality services all over the world spend six months at any Sandals resort, learning the business. We caught up with one of these interns in Saint Lucia, Swiss Jessica Karsch, who became an honorary local.
TT: How did you hear about the Sandals Intern Program?
Jessica: Sandals isn’t very well known in Switzerland but a classmate’s dad often travels to the Caribbean and knew about hotel and their great Intern Program. I’m very grateful for this opportunity, which has completely changed my life and mindset. I have met, lived with and built strong friendships with other interns from all over the world and we’ve all had a fantastic journey.
TT: How long have you been in Saint Lucia?
Jessica: I’ve spent 6 of the most wonderful months of my life on this beautiful island and I wish I could stay longer.
TT: What activities would you recommend to visitors?
Jessica: Even though the island is small, there is much to do. Every experience I had here was wonderful. I have to recommend climbing Gros Piton; the view at the top is worth the steep trail! There’s nothing better than going to Soufrière to visit the drive-in volcano, relax and regenerate with a mud bath or enjoy the fresh spring water of the one of waterfalls in the area.
TT: What was your favourite thing about living in Saint Lucia?
Jessica: I was here during Carnival and it was such a different experience! The parties and the actual jump up were incredibly fun! Of course, you can’t miss the Friday Night at Gros Islet. Eat some local food, have some drinks and dance to the best soca and reggae music! Saint Lucian people definitely know how to enjoy themselves! I loved everything about this place but, without any doubts, the best things are the people and the culture. I’ve never felt so welcomed and stress free as in Saint Lucia. They are always smiling and ready to help you, making you feel even better then home. I got the opportunity to work with great colleagues who made of every single day a good one. I also worked out at CrossFit758, where I found my Caribbean mom and an entire awesome family that shares the same passion for sport as me. I definitely enjoyed myself to the fullest during my free time with my new friends and family.
TT: Will you come back to Saint Lucia?
Jessica: I can’t wait to finish my studies and come back just in time for Carnival 2017! Thank you Saint Lucia for all the good vibes; all the memories are locked in my heart.
