The young and upcoming star, Aiasha Gustave, has burst on to the scene with her catchy song, Façade. Not a newbie to the entertainment business, Aiasha has two other hit songs in Saint Lucia, 'Si Mi Love Yuh' and 'Come Nuh Baby'. She has also dabbled in acting - you can see her in Sean Field's movie, 'Soucouyant', filmed on the island. Team TT caught up with the 24 year old on what it’s like in the entertainment business and how Saint Lucia inspires her music.

What inspires your music?

My life experiences as well as other people’s experiences, the good, the bad and the truth.

When did you realize you wanted to go into singing?

I’ve always been interested in the arts and performing, putting on shows and skits for family and friends. However, I knew I had a passion for music at the age of about 9 or 10.

What do you love about making music?

I am free to express whatever I want, however I want, and actually have fun doing so.

Who are your role models?

I look up to female artists such as Sade, Alicia Keys, Betty Wright and Lauren Hill for always having real, honest and beautifully written lyrics and fantastic performances.

What are some challenges you’ve faced in the industry?

I’ve found the industry to be very male dominated, and being a young unsigned female trying to move forward independently, situations regarding progression tend to be disadvantageous.

How does being born and living in Saint Lucia inspire your music?

Growing up on such a beautiful island with such a rich culture has definitely influenced my sound, style and delivery when writing and performing. I describe home as a sanctuary to be creative; because, no matter where you go you are always surrounded by wildlife, nature and breath-taking scenery to inspire, spark and ignite creativity.

When writing your music, what puts you in the mood?

I absolutely love lighting scented candles and incense in a cozy setting for certain moods (with a cup of herbal tea or wine) and for other moods I enjoy being surrounded by nature.

Do you have a motto you live by? If so, what is it?

I have a few: “Do what you can, where you are, with what you have.” “Bloom where you are planted.”
”Actions speak louder than words. “

What is your proudest achievement?

Placing 8th at the 2010 Miss World Pageant, as well as being awarded Saint Lucian Creative Notable by Ministry of Tourism, Heritage and the Creative Industries.

What do you love about making music?

I am free to express whatever I want, however I want, and actually have fun doing so.

Where would you like to be in 5 years?

I’d like to have a stable, successful career within the creative industry, with prestigious music and film awards/ accomplishments under my belt. I would also like to run my own business and have a family of my own.

What have you learnt from being in the music industry?

You can easily get lost if you are unsure of yourself so the first and most important key is to know who you are as an individual and artist and to take time molding yourself and craft. The second most significant thing I’ve learnt is that hard work, practice and complete dedication are a must to even make a ripple within the industry, far less a wave. You have to believe in your brand/ product more than anyone else and be confident with it. Nothing good comes easy.
