Compere Chien and Compere Chat were great friends. They shared a plot of land and decided to cultivate it. Now that plot of land was located far from where the friends lived so they had to carry food items in order to cook their meal. They brought with them, among other things, a large tin of butter. Cats love butter and Compere Chat was no exception. He made up his mind to eat up the entire tin of butter.

When they arrived at the place, Compere Chat hung the tin high up in a tree out of Compere Chien’s reach. Now this tree was about one quarter mile from where they had to work on the land.

Chien and Chat started working but they were very far from each other. Compere Chat shouted, “Ati!” then said more angrily, “Who is this person calling me?” He then called out to Compere Chien, “Hi Compere, some stupid person is calling me.”

“Well go and see who it is,” Chien shouted back.

Compere Chat hurried away. After some time he came back licking his lips.

“What did the person want?” Compere Chien asked.

“Oh, he wanted me to give his child a name,” Chat responded.

“What name did you give the child?” Chien wanted to know.

“Half gone,” answered Chat with a smile.

Compere Chat started to work again, there was no sound except the noise that the two friends made. After about one hour, Compere Chat shouted, “Ati,” then said angrily, “Why don’t they leave me alone?”

Chat shouted to Chien, “Hi Compere, some other person is calling me.”

“Well go and see who it is,” Chien responded.

Off ran Compere Chat. After about fifteen minutes he returned with that same smile.

“What did the person want?” asked Chien.

“Oh, another person wanted me to give his child a name.”

“So what name did you give?”

   “Quarter full,” Chat responded.

The two of them started working again. After about half an hour Compere Chat shouted again, “Ati,” this time sounding extremely angry. “Oh my,” he said stamping his feet, “Why can’t the person leave me alone?” Then he said to Chien, “Hi Compere, another fool just called me.”

“Well go,” replied Compere Chien, hard at work.

Compere Chat ran off and after ten minutes he returned, licking his lips.

“What did the person want?” Chien asked.

“Yet another person wanted me to give his child a name.”

“So what name did you give?”

   “All gone,” Compere Chat replied.

After working for some time, Compere Chien decided to stop work in order to cook lunch. When they arrived at the spot where the tin of butter was hanging, Compere Chien told Compere Chat to climb the tree in order to collect the tin.

Compere Chat climbed the tree, reached for the tin and dropped it down. The lid came off and Compere Chien saw something which made him open his mouth in surprise. The tin was empty! Then a thought suddenly came to Chien, “So all the time Compere Chat was saying half full, quarter full and all gone, it was my butter he was christening.”

He looked around for Compere Chat but by that time Chat was running as fast as he could through the woods. Chien started to run after him but he had to give up since he had lost sight of Chat. He was very angry. He made up his mind that he would take his revenge on Compere Chat any time he met him.

This is why up to this day dogs and cats are enemies.
