Stephen and Joann came to Saint Lucia on a cruise ship. They were here for just a day but it was one they had spent months planning: their wedding ceremony.

Stephen and Joann are from Rhode Island in the United States. They met 15 years ago through a mutual friend whom they had both known since childhood although, amazingly, they did not encounter each other until they were adult. Having done so, it didn’t take them long to realize that they were meant for each other. “When we first met we were so young and we had nothing,” says Stephen, who vowed to improve life for himself and Joann by doing well in his profession and by investing in real estate.

The couple’s growing family enhanced their joy. First came a daughter, then twins and then their youngest son. As Joann reveals: “We never planned for it to take this long for us to get married. But it gave me time to think about what we wanted and to organise my dream wedding.” Their success in investing enabled them to make that dream come true.

Stephen and Joann come from large, loving families, and sixty-three people accompanied them on a cruise to the Caribbean for their wedding. Most of the guests were unaware that the couple had already married in a simple ceremony in the US, for the benefit of Joann’s grandmother who was not well enough to make the trip to Saint Lucia. They both agree, though, that the ‘big day’ was when they again said “I do” in the beautiful setting of the ruins on Pigeon Island, in the sunshine, and to the sounds of a live steel band.

Coming ashore for just a day meant that time was tight, and procedures were not traditional: the bride and groom and their guests were ferried to and from Pigeon Island in buses, and the reception took place back on the ship as it had to set sail. But none of this detracted from what Joann describes as “the most amazing day of my life”. Even Stephen admits that he became emotional at the sight of Joann in her gown and having their four children with them.

Joann says that she fell in love with the scenery of Saint Lucia and that it was the perfect place for their dream wedding. At TT, we can fully understand the sentiment, and we wish the couple and their children a future brimming with happiness and health.
